Episode: Coach Teresa Lentz on Needville Win and Davenport Preview

Welcome to the Calallen Softball Coaches Show! In this episode, host Chris Doelle talks with Coach Teresa Lentz about the recent playoff series and the upcoming challenge.

Needville Series Recap

Coach Lentz is feeling good and excited after the team’s performance in the last round. They secured a solid win against Needville, taking both games with scores of 7-2.

  • Game 1 (Friday night): Played at home with a great crowd. Needville initially took a two-run lead. Coach was proud of the girls for staying in control despite Needville’s speed and power. The team scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead, added two more runs, and then two extra runs in the sixth inning to seal the win.
    • Key Player Performances (Game 1):
      • Jordan: Pitched, had six strikeouts, and allowed only five hits against a tough hitting team. Also hit a home run.
      • Chris: Made two awesome sliding catches in the outfield.
      • Brooklyn MeadorĀ  : Went two for four. Also hit off the wall.
      • Kylie Butcher: Had two RBIs and went two for three. Also hit a home run.
      • BB: Went two for three with stolen bases. Also hit off the wall.
      • Adrina: Had two walks as Needville seemed to avoid pitching to her.
      • Kaden: Got a nice hit off the wall.
      • Kiana Vargas: Hit a home run.
    • The team displayed high intensity and focus, hitting the ball hard, described as “intimidating”. They saw all three of Needville’s pitchers.
  • Game 2: Played in a different setting and field, but resulted in the exact same score, 7-2. Calallen started differently, scoring two runs in the first inning.
    • Key Player Performances (Game 2):
      • Bianca (pitcher): Was on fire, with her pitches being very difficult for Needville to hit. She shut them down for four innings, striking them out frequently. She finished with six strikeouts and kept Needville off balance. She also reached a significant milestone, potentially her 600th or 700th strikeout.
      • BB: Went four for two (likely meaning four hits or four plate appearances, two hits based on game 1 performance) with one RBI.
      • Audrina: Had two RBIs.
      • Kiana: Had an RBI.
      • Brooklyn: Went three for four with an RBI.
    • There were no home runs in Game 2, potentially due to wind blowing in, but the girls were still hitting the ball hard. The team had 11 hits. Needville’s freshman starter pitched the entire game. The Calallen girls didn’t ease up even after Needville scored runs in the fifth, adding two or three more runs to secure the win.

Health Update

The team is mostly in good health. However, there is concern for Lizzie Smith, one of the team’s fastest players who excels in the outfield and on the bases. She might have a torn hip or labrum, potentially related to her high jump participation. The team is hoping for good news from the doctor and that she only needs rehab rather than surgery, though the potential injury does hurt the team slightly.

Upcoming Game: Regional Quarterfinal vs. Davenport

The next opponent is Davenport, and Coach notes that at this stage of the playoffs, no team is a pushover. Calallen needs to focus on playing their game.

  • Davenport’s Pitcher: Throws in the mid-50s with significant movement, a tight spin, and stays away with a curve or drop curve, also mixing speeds. She hits her spots, which could challenge Calallen’s lineup.
  • Keys to Victory: Putting the ball in play with runners in scoring position, executing, making routine defensive plays, and the pitchers hitting their spots. Coach emphasizes the need to focus as nothing is guaranteed in the playoffs.
  • Game Details:
    • Location: Three Rivers High School (a middle ground site).
    • Field: Turf field (the team hasn’t played there before).
    • Format: A one-game series.
    • Visitor Status: Calallen will be the visitor after losing the flip.
    • Date and Time: Friday at 6:30 PM.
    • Significance: This is the regional quarterfinal, a crucial game to advance to the regional final.

Playoff Series Format Discussion

The decision on whether to play a one-game or three-game series in the playoffs is determined by a flip (odd or even) between the teams. This can happen all the way up until the state championship game. Previously, this option was only available up to the state semi-final, but now the state semi-final can also be a series for the first time. While most teams often prefer a one-game series depending on their strategy, Coach Lentz noted that regardless of the format, the team still needs to win and “beat the best” to advance.

Coach Lentz is excited for the upcoming game and appreciates the support.
