Welcome to This Week in Victoria! Each week, Brother Gary Moses and Chris Doelle sit down and go over all the happenings in the Crossroads.

Hosts: Chris Doelle and Brother Gary Moses.

Chris and Gary discuss upcoming events and happenings in Victoria, focusing on the end of the school year, graduations, and Memorial Day weekend activities. They also talk about sponsors and UT Athletics.

Events & Topics by Day:

  • Wednesday:
    • It’s the end of the school year, with lots of graduations, ceremonies, and special events happening.
    • Chris and Gary visited Patty Welder and Dudley schools this week.
    • Gary was at Patty Welder, Chris’s old stomping grounds, for an awards assembly.
    • Gary was the guest speaker at a research graduation ceremony for kids being groomed to work at the DAO Dedrift plant project.
    • A Lunch and Learn event with the Victoria Police Department is happening today at the community center.
    • The wrap-up event for the Texas Walk Across the State healthy program is tonight at Tracy Park from 5:30 to 7 pm, giving out awards.
    • The BFW hamburger night is taking place. Gary praises the good burgers and people, especially the veterans.
    • There’s a No Pressure Book Club at the library from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.
    • Chris mentions working with Andrew at the library on a future podcast series about Texas music, featuring local people with connections to music scenes in California and Houston.
    • Gary notes it’s a busy Wednesday afternoon.
  • Thursday:
    • Gary is visiting a school every day this week.
    • Seed Mission Valley is having a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new school that will open next year. Gary describes it as a beautiful school based on seeing it during the Parade of Homes.
    • The Vita Cafe is having a ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow afternoon at 4:30. It’s a new cafe located out towards where Ventur will eventually be.
    • There is a learning lab at the library at 4:00 pm.
    • Mark Zapeda and Michael Vanic will be at Aercrafters at 2:05 pm.
    • Wash and Wag is happening at the Dorothy Okonip Center on both Thursday and Friday, offering pet grooming services.
  • Friday:
    • Wash and Wag continues at the Dorothy Okonip Center.
    • The Victoria Public Library has their Fun Fridays every week at 10 o’clock. This week’s event is “Egg carton”, which Chris plans to check out.
    • The Children Discover Museum also has Fun Fridays in the morning and afternoon.
    • The theatrical group from Cade Junior High School (also called Cade Middle School) is putting on a production of “Annie Jr.”. Performances are Friday at 7 o’clock and Saturday at 1:00 and 7:00 o’clock, for a total of three performances. Gary is impressed by the kids’ ability to memorize lines.
    • The Memorial Weekend Bash runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Riverside Park. This is described as a big production featuring Tejano Music, a car show, a barbecue cook off, and three days of top flight entertainers.
    • Donnie Edwards, described by Gary as the best Elvis impersonator he has seen, is performing at the Wall Center from 7:30 to 10 pm. There are very few tickets left, so call the box office soon.
    • The El Camino live band will be at Carol Crafters on Friday night.
  • Saturday:
    • “Annie Jr.” by the Cade theatrical group has two performances at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
    • The Memorial Weekend Bash continues at Riverside Park.
    • The Victoria Public Library Chess Club meets from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.
    • The Victoria Farmers Market is at the Patty Public Health Center from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Gary notes the market is growing.
    • A two-day Chili Cook-off Charity event is taking place at the Victoria K Lake RV Resort. Funds raised go towards scholarships given away each year. Saturday includes Jackpot beans, Junior Chili, and Kasie Chili for the adults. Most events discussed are either free or for charity, often supporting local Vapa charities.
    • Downtown Victoria hosts their Artisan Market on Main Street from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
    • Chris and Gary discuss sports, including the current status of the Astros. They give their picks for the early over/under odds for the Dallas Cowboys (7.5 wins – both pick over) and the Houston Texans (9.5 wins – Gary picks over, Chris picks under). They acknowledge these are Vegas odds and just for fun.
  • Sunday:
    • The Memorial Weekend Bash concludes at Riverside Park.
    • The Chili Cook-off Charity event continues at Victoria K Lake RV Resort. Sunday’s events include a dip contest at 12:00 pm and the Kasie Chili contest again at 1:00 pm. These events support local Vapa charities and scholarships.
    • The Holy Family KC Council 9088 is holding a spaghetti dinner at the Holy Family Church at 8:30 am. It is to-go only and costs $10 a plate. Gary expresses his love for spaghetti.
  • Monday (Memorial Day):
    • There will be Memorial Day ceremonies honoring those who sacrificed for their country.
    • A morning ceremony is at the Plaza gazebo at 11:00 am with a speaker.
    • An evening ceremony will be held at the Field of Honor at Parkway Church at 7:00 pm.
    • The real meaning of the Memorial Day weekend is highlighted: remembering those who gave their lives to ensure freedom today.
  • Tuesday:
    • Mission Valley has a Field of Honor dedication ceremony at the school at 9:00 am, continuing to honor the military and veterans.
