Calallen Softball Coaches Show – Episode NotesĀ

Coach Teresa Lentz joined host, Chris Doelle in the show to discuss the exciting recent playoff series and the upcoming one.
Fredericksburg Playoff Series Recap:
Game 1: Calallen lost 2-0. Both teams had some of the best pitchers in the region, throwing 65+ mph with movement. Hitters were adjusting. Calallen felt the loss came down to needing better execution of “short game things” and “playing catch”.
Adjustments: After Game 1, the team analyzed the opponent’s pitching and focused on being patient at the plate, only swinging at pitches they wanted. This was a “huge difference”.
Game 2: A dominant 15-0 win. Fredericksburg pitched their number two pitcher. Calallen’s girls “jumped on her so bad,” scoring seven runs in the first inning. The Game 1 loss “woke us up a little bit”.
Game 2 Standouts: Pitcher Bianca Gonzalez threw “amazing” (4 strikeouts, 1 hit). Adrina, BB, and Kadenho hit home runs. BB had two triples, and Kylie Butcher had a triple. Several girls went three for four. Coach Teresa was proud of the girls’ bounce back.
Game 3: An exciting, “mental battle” in the heat. BB started with a lead-off double. Jordan pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits and recording 13 strikeouts.
Game-Changing Moment (Game 3): In the seventh inning, with the score potentially close, Brooklyn Matters hit a “monster” home run that provided “breathing room” and seemed to “take the wind out of their sail”.
Overall: Calallen won the series. Coach Teresa was proud of how the team adjusted and “got more locked in and better”. She believes this series helped prepare them.
Preview of the Upcoming Liberty Series:
Opponent: Calallen faces Liberty. This is an unexpected matchup due to district realignment.
History: Calallen lost to Liberty 4-1 earlier in the season.
Liberty’s Recent Performance: They are a “great team”, and have only given up two runs in their last three playoff games.
Calallen’s Perceived Advantage: Calallen has experience playing a series, while Liberty has only played one game per round in the playoffs. Facing strong pitching in the previous series helps Calallen prepare.
Significance: This is a “big one,” potentially featuring one of the best teams in 4A. They are glad it’s a three-game series to determine the best team.
Team Mindset: The girls seem focused, excited, and working hard. They understand what’s at stake and feel prepared.
Series Logistics:
Format: This is the first time playing a series in a state round, requiring the team to set things up themselves.
Schedule & Location: The three-game series is Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday in Kyle.
Travel: Due to graduation on Thursday, Calallen must travel back and forth between games, which isn’t ideal but preferred over playing back-to-back games on a Saturday.
Home/Away: They will alternate, Calallen home Wednesday, Liberty home Friday, flip for Saturday if needed.
Timing: Playing the first game on Wednesday feels “quick” and “a little weird”.
Conclusion: Both Coach Teresa Lentz and Chris anticipate a competitive series
