This episode of the Calallen Softball Coaches Show, hosted by Chris Doelle, featured an interview with Head Coach Teresa Lentz of the Calallen Wildcat softball team.

Coach Teresa Lentz discussed the team’s recent victories against Kingsville and Zapata. In the Kingsville game, the team had a strong start with 10 runs in the first inning. Jordan Thibodeaux pitched a perfect game with 14 strikeouts, achieving her 500th career strikeout. Kaylee Lopez and BB both hit home runs. Against Zapata, the Wildcats won 10-0. Bianca pitched her first game back from injury and performed well. Kiana Vargas hit a walk-off home run, and Audrina also had a significant hit with runners on base.

Looking ahead, Coach Lentz emphasized the importance of tonight’s game against Robstown, who are their closest competitor in district play. Winning this game would clinch the district title. She acknowledged that Robstown is a tough opponent and the team needs to be prepared and adjust.

Coach Lentz expressed her gratitude for the parents’ support, particularly those involved in the booster club. She specifically thanked several parents for their contributions to the program. She noted the positive shift towards parents supporting all the girls on the team.

Regarding playoff preparation, Coach Lentz stated that they have been progressively creating pressure situations in practice since the beginning of the season. They implement consequences to make practice more challenging than games. The team is aiming to play on Thursday, May 30th, at 1:00 PM.

Coach Lentz shared her perspective on the team’s perception, stating she doesn’t view them as an “empire” but acknowledges that opponents likely bring their best game against them, which Calallen welcomes as it helps them improve. They want to earn their success and do not shy away from competition.

Finally, Coach Lentz provided a health update, noting a few minor issues but overall good health. Several talented players are participating in area track, with some potentially moving on to regionals and state. Lizzy Smith is advancing to area for High Jump, and Audrina Almaraz and Brooklyn Meador are moving on in Shot Put and Discus (though the specific events weren’t certain). The focus is on maintaining health as they approach the playoffs.
