You have to be on Facebook! Not so fast… it may not be what you need at all.

Today, I want to talk about Facebook. I want to dive a little deeper than I have in previous episodes and that’s really where the show is going to evolve into just short but deep dives into subjects and Facebook came up the other day. I was talking to a potential client and he was like “I know I got to be on Facebook, I know everybody’s out there”. And I’m like “Hey, hold up, Facebook may not be right for you”. And I know everybody’s freaking out right now, “really? I shouldn’t be on Facebook?” No, I didn’t say that. I’m saying, it may not be your perfect solution when it comes to marketing. Obviously, you need to be on social media, that’s where the action is, that’s where the it is, that’s where the customers are. But take a look at what it is you sell, what it is your product or service. Take a look at the demographics of who your customers are, and if you don’t know the demographics of your customers? Shame on you. And we’ll cover that in our future episode. But start tracking that right now. You need to know everything about your typical customer and I understand, there is no typical customer but there is a composite and that composite is important. So, Facebook has changed a lot, there is a lot of grandparents on Facebook. And that isn’t to say that’s a bad thing, that’s just to say, that has become very mainstream and the teenagers, they are all but gone. So if your market is the teenage crowd, yes, you probably don’t need to be there, or let me rephrase, you still should be there, personally, maybe not the company, in fact I think, the whole company profile on Facebook is pretty well shot. Facebook has tweaked their algorithms so much that when you post something on your corporate or your company Facebook page, it gets seen by so few people compared to what was allowed back. Just a year and a half ago, if you posted something on your company page on Facebook, typical thing, you get seen by a few hundred people easily and that’s only if you had a few hundred people, but now, you could have 2000 people following you on your business Facebook page and you can post something, it may be seen by single digits, we’re talking 7, 8, 10 if it’s really interesting and it gets some sort of heat. It’s crazy. It’s just the bank for the buck is not there on the business pages anymore. You could post that same thing on your personal page and be seen by a ton more people. So that may not be where you need to go. It is maybe Instagram, it’s maybe Pinterest, it’s maybe LinkedIn, depending on what it is you’re trying to promote. So don’t just jump on the Facebook bandwagon because that’s left a long time ago. But again, don’t ignore it because links from Facebook still have a lot of value when it comes to Google and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. It’s being found when people search for your product or service.
